Biological applications
Metripol has been used for a wide variety of biological applications. Traditionally, polarising microscopy has been little used in this area but the sensitivity of the Metripol and its ease of use make it a perfect tool for studying many biological samples.
Many structural proteins, such as collagen, keratin and actin are anisotropic and therefore exhibit birefringence. Other biological features that may exhibit birefringence include cholesterol (in liquid crystal state), uric acid crystals (important in diagnosing gout) and plant materials.
